About Us

Washington Township is located in the NE corner of Henry County and is one of thirteen townships created after the county was formed in 1820.  This agricultural township has 29.5 sq miles with a population of 1,912 according to the 2010 census.  The township is bordered on the east with Lucas County, Fulton County to the north, Liberty Township on the west and the Maumee River on the south.

Residents and visitors enjoy the State of Ohio forest with its beautiful wild flowers, vegetation, and wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys. Many take advantage of biking and walking along the Wabash Cannonball Rails to Trail that traverses east and west across the township.  The Maumee River has served as a recreational spot for boating, fishing and family fun.

There are three township cemeteries: Heath, Mohler and Texas.  Each year on Memorial Day, a public ceremony is held at the G.A.R Memorial Monument in Heath to honor veterans that gave their lives in past wars.

The township is governed by three elected trustees and one fiscal officer.  The Washington/Liberty Township volunteer fire department provides fire and medical services to the township residents.  The Henry County Sheriff Department provides protection and response to emergency situations throughout Washington Township.

In the interest of public safety your township trustees recommend the these safety measures be followed :

Whether you’re planting a tree, shrub or garden, aerating your yard, installing a mailbox or building a fence or deck, contacting OHIO811 before you dig protects your home and your family. Avoid potential injury, property damage, and utility disruption by following the Law and digging safely. Learn how to contact OHIO811, the information you’ll need to provide, how utilities respond to your request, and more.
Please take just a few minutes to call 800-362-2764 or 8-1-1 or visit e-dig and request the location of underground facilities near your proposed digging site. Knowing where gas, electric and other facilities cross your property will help protect your life, your property, and your wallet.

TAKE IT SLOW ON ICE AND SNOW

That time of the year has arrived when snow falls and roadways can get icy and covered with snow.  Please take care when driving your vehicle and slow down when approaching and passing your Township plows. The Township policy on snow removal is to plow when two (2) inches of snow accumulates on the roadway.  The Township has two dump trucks and one utility truck equipped with plow blades. When necessary, the Township’s four wheel drive tractor will be used to clear back drifts and aid in the plowing of heavy snow.  All vehicles are equipped with yellow flashing lights for safety purposes during snow plowing operations.

PLOWING RESPONSIBILITIES

The Township has the responsibility for snow plowing and maintaining all township roads along with several county roads in the Township.  The following roads will be plowed by the Township;  Road 1 from S3 to Road U, (Providence Township will plow Road 1 from Road U To Road W), Roads 1D, 2, 4, 5B, 6, 6C, 7 between U and W and S south to dead end, R2, T2, T3, U4, U, R2, V3, 2B, 3B, Catherine Drive, Texas and Colton streets.

RESIDENTS RESPONSIBILITIES

Please report any road hazards such as fallen trees, objects on the roadway, down power lines,  or any other emergency situation to the Henry County Sheriff dispatcher by dialing 911.  The dispatcher will contact a Township Trustee for road problems and Liberty Washington Township Fire Department for fire and rescue response.  Delay as much non-essential travel as possible until after the roads have been plowed.  Do not push and leave a pile of snow from your driveway or property out onto the roadway.

OUTDOOR BURNING

Ohio DNR Forestry prohibits outdoor open burning and prescribed fires in the months of March, April, May, October, and November between 6am and 6pm. This ban includes burning of yard waste, trash, and debris, even in a proper burn barrel. Click HERE for details!

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP MAILBOX POLICY

Mailbox Construction and Placement

The Washington Township Board of Trustees approves the policy that all mailboxes placed within the public right-of-way on any Washington Township roadway for the purpose of receiving and sending mail through the United States postal system, must be in compliance with mailbox regulations/standards established by the United States postal system.  Township citizens can obtain written regulations pertaining to mailbox sizes, type construction, set back from the edge of the roadway, etc. from any United States Post Office.

Mailbox Damaged by Township Vehicle

The policy of the Board of Trustees regarding mailboxes damaged as a result of snow removal or any other situation is as follows:

When a township employee observes or is made aware that the vehicle he/she is operating did strike and cause damage to a mailbox, the driver shall report the damage immediately to a trustee and to the owner either in person, by email, or phone message within 24 hours of the property damage occurrence.

If a mailbox is damaged by the snow blade or any other part of the township vehicle and cannot be repaired by the township, it will be replaced with a galvanized or aluminum mailbox on a metal post at the township expense.

However, the mailbox owner eligible for a replacement mailbox may choose instead to be reimbursed for up to $100.00 for the cost of a similar mailbox damaged.  The owner shall have the responsibility for installing the mailbox and/or post along with providing documentation of the replacement cost to the township.

Should a mailbox be damaged by snow, slush or ice from a passing township plow, the mailbox owner will be responsible for any expenses to repair or replace the damaged mailbox.
